Challenge to make it work

Re: Developing a vibrant city centre in the digital age, April 24.

Your correspondent made interesting suggestions of ways in which to develop a vibrant city centre, with which I agree.

However, such ideas are difficult to implement when one must first consider who pays the wages, rent, rates, power etc. It would be a challenge to make it work.

Ten Talents Charitable Trust sells a wide range of handcrafts from its shop on the corner of Ormond Road and Maclean Street — including hand-knitted wool and homespun wool clothes, for babies to adults, handmade wood ware and wooden toys, knitting wool, etc.  For over 50 years, Ten Talents has succeeded because, amongst other things, the staff are unpaid volunteers. Commission is paid by suppliers to sell their handwork in Ten Talents Shop locally, not  online.

Retailing is not for the faint-hearted.
