Catering for all road users

1 min read

“Roads are for vehicles — not pedestrians.” I had to read this statement by your correspondent Roger Handford (Pushing mode shift on Grey St is stupid) several times to be sure I had not been mistaken. So the poor person on foot has to, what . . . levitate?

Unfortunately the whole article (and the similar one by Tiny Thompson, who claims “no negative feedback” — which is maybe also the result of disbelief) is classic “cars must rule” rhetoric.

I do not know the details of the proposed Grey Street works. That is not really the point. What is the point is that this epitomises the blinkered approach that never, never shall anything be done to inconvenience the motorist.

Do they not know that the most vibrant, liveable cities in the world are those that have recognised and catered for all road users? Is Gisborne doomed to never be one of them?
