Masters to play Waituhi in the final
IT was tipped to be a close contest and that was how it turned out when the Lytton Old Boys Masters got home by a goal last night to make the senior men’s (B Grade) hockey final.
They defeated YMP B 1-0 on the Hain Farming Turf at Harry Barker Reserve.
“The Masters played with only 10 players for the whole match, so they did really well to win it,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.
“YMP B had lots of scoring opportunities but couldn’t put them away.”
The Masters scored through Terry Thomas seven minutes into the second quarter.
“The game went end to end but YMP just couldn’t finish it off in the circle,” Scragg said.
“Huge credit to the Masters for playing for each other and for a place in the senior final against Waituhi, who will be tough opposition.
“The Masters will need to have a full complement of players for that match on Saturday week.”
Scragg said there were no standout players for either team in the match.
“It was a scrappy sort of game, but the Masters advance to the final.”
The final playoff game, at 6.30pm tonight, features GMC Green and Amber Dental Gisborne Girls’ High School. The winners will play YMP in the premier women’s grand final next week.
“This has been a great week for Gisborne hockey,” Scragg said.
“I think GMC would be favoured tonight, but who knows.
“This is semifinal time and the team who take their chances will get the reward.”
