Asphalting work schedule for SH35 updated

1 min read

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has revised its schedule for upcoming overnight road asphalting work on State Highway 35  in and near Gisborne.

Detours will be in place throughout all stages of the work.

The closures will require a combination of stop-go controls and road closures in place and there may also be temporary speed limits in place during opening hours while crews are part-way through completion.

“The detours in place will change as the crews move to various locations of SH35, and all detours will be signposted,” NZTA system Hawke’s Bay/Tairāwhiti manager Martin Colditz said.

Road users should factor these overnight closures into their journey time and be prepared to follow the signposted detours. The updated SH35 work programme is as follows —

  • Stage 1: SH35 Awapuni Road between Stanley Road and Grey Street roundabout  - April 29 to May 2.  Road closure from 7pm to 5am with a detour for light vehicles via Grey Street, Salisbury Road, Stanley Road.  Heavy vehicles and HPMVs heading to the port should use the approved detour via SH2 Makaraka, Back Ormond Road, Ormond Road and The Esplanade.
  • Stage 2: SH35 Wainui Road between Matthews Road and Hirini Street — May 3 to May 26, 7pm to 5am.  Matthews Road to Rutene Road – stop/go for all traffic. Rutene Road to Hirini Street — road closure with detours for light vehicles. Heavy vehicles and HPMVs should use the approved detour via Rutene Road and the Esplanade if you are heading to the port.
  • Stage 3: SH35 Customhouse Street between The Cut and Childers Road roundabout — May 28  to June 4. Road closures from 7pm to 5am with detours for light vehicles. Heavy vehicles and HPMVs heading to the port should use the approved detour via SH2 Makaraka, Back Ormond Road, Ormond Road and The Esplanade.
