The art of growing up

Rampaging feminist poet Rachel McAlpine embraces her mellow years

From “rampaging feminist” poet in the ’70s to 70-something poet who embraces her mellow years, Rachel McAlpine entertained and edified her audience with a reading at Muirs Bookshop cafe last night. A get-together in Gisborne with friends from mature women’s dance company, Crows Feet Dance Collective, coincided with Ms McAlpine’s poetry evening. Ms McAlpine read from early works in which she struggled to find an identity outside suburban domesticity; poems based on her seven-year-old grand-daughter’s quirky insights, and a collection that considers the art of living in the ripening years.
