Men’s counsellor on assault charges
Men’s counsellor and anti-domestic violence campaigner Winton Kere Ropiha has made a preliminary court appearance on five charges of a domestic nature, one of them assault.
Ropiha, 51, appeared in Gisborne District Court yesterday and indicated not guilty pleas would be entered to all the charges and that he would elect trial by jury.
He was remanded on bail for a case review hearing on October 1.
The alleged offences date back to 2017.
They include two charges arising out of an alleged incident last December — assault and breaching a protection order.
Two other charges relate to alleged breaches of the order last year — one in June and one between late October and early November.
Ropiha was further charged with a breach of the order in June this year.
He is represented by counsel Manaaki Terekia.
