Gisborne - East Coast golf roundup

Poverty Bay

AFTER braving Cape Runaway wind and rain he described as the worst he had worked in, Gisborne Herald head photographer Paul Rickard scoffed at Sunday’s milder conditions on the golf course.

Rickard, who covered the Ngati Porou East Coast club rugby final on Saturday, blew away the division 2 men’s field with 84-16-68, for 40 points. He was seven points ahead of second-placed Stu Harbottle and the only person who entered the club competition to play to handicap or better.

An eagle-3 on the first hole set Nick Richardson up for victory in the division 1 men’s stableford on Saturday.

Richardson’s 3-hybrid-hit second shot resulted in his ball landing about 15-feet from the pin, and he slotted the putt.

Birdies on the eighth and ninth put him 2-under, which he held to the 16th only to falter over the last few holes for 74-4-70, for 38 points.

The Burke Cup President v Captain women’s team stableford event yesterday went down to the proverbial wire.

The team of vice-president Vicki Fraser, standing in for absent president Pip Dymock, won the drawn team aggregate stableford against captain Odette Thompson’s side by just one point.

Faye Allen’s 37 points was the best individual points tally

MARIA Sheridan highlighted her best round since returning to the fairways with a two.

Sheridan shot 94-25-69, including a two on the 14th, to win the women’s net.

Scoring over the week was otherwise average, influenced heavily by the weather.

Shaun Pahina will probably never win the men’s net again with his Sunday effort of 94-17-77.

Qualifying for the men’s club championships continues. Players have until Tuesday, July 27, to post an 18-hole score. A player must designate it is a qualifying round before playing by getting his scorecard stamped by the secretary or signed by a committee member or Evan Parkin.

Play is off the blue tees for the senior, intermediate and junior divisions while endeavour qualifying is from the white tees.

Te Puia Springs

“A TOUGH day at the course but still marginally more fun than working.”

So said Springs stalwart Mark Higham after strong winds buffeted the course and kept scoring down on Sunday.

It didn’t, however, stop Nehe Dewes from disposing of Ian Logan 6 and 5 in a Makarika Cup match.

Round 1 is scheduled for August 1 but matches can be played before that.

Hazel Miratana defeated Robyn Ngatai in a Women’s Handicap Cup second-round match and Miratana’s 35 points also won the women’s stableford.

Pete Ngarimu’s 73 was good enough for the men’s net honours on countback.

SUNDAY — Men’s net: P Ngarimu 73, B Clark 73.

Women’s stableford: H Miratana 33, H McClutchie 25.
