Injured whale beaches at Opoutama

A two-metre long sub-adult female pygmy sperm whale was found beached near Mahia Peninsula at Opoutama Beach.

Department of Conservation biodiversity ranger Jamie Quirk said due to the condition of the whale and the weather conditions at the beach, it was not deemed possible to refloat the whale.

“So the decision was made to euthanise it. Following this, the whale was buried.”

He said the whale had an injury, but the cause of the beaching was unknown.

“There is a season when pygmy sperm whales strand at Mahia, usually between March to June.

“It's important to report marine mammal strandings to DoC right away; you can do this by calling 0800 DOC HOT.” he said.
