Rare treat on display for visitors to the Botanical Gardens
Visitors to the Botanical Gardens have the chance to enjoy a rare treat — an agave in bloom.
“This agave has been in flower since February. They only flower about once every 20 years, so this is a rarity,” Gisborne District Council liveable communities acting director De-Arne Sutherland said.
After the plant flowers, it normally dies due to the energy put into helping the blooming branch grow.
“Young pup plants (from seeds which fall to the ground) grow to take the main plant’s place.”
