Waikato chopper responds to ‘challenging’ Matawai rescue
A RESCUE chopper from the Waikato was called in Monday afternoon to get help to an injured log truck driver in a forest area west of Matawai.
The Rescue Coordination Centre was alerted to an emergency locator beacon activation at around 4pm that day.
Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded due to the Trust Tairawhiti Rescue helicopter being unable to fly because of weather conditions.
“A man had sustained rib and hip injuries following the logging accident,” a spokesman for the Waikato chopper service said.
“The onboard crew winched the patient from his location and he was flown to Waikato Hospital for further treatment.
“He was in a stable condition.
“It was a pretty challenging rescue with the wind on top of the valley and the height we had to be to conduct the rescue safely.”
