Accused of injuring baby
A woman accused of intentionally wounding a five-month-old baby or doing so with reckless disregard, has made a brief appearance in Gisborne District Court.
Veteange Savou, 42, previously pleaded not guilty to the charge, which involves a child that is not hers.
She appeared during a Crown call-over fixture. Discussions centred on scheduling issues.
Counsel Michael Lynch told Judge Warren Cathcart the case was a complex one, involving evidence to be called by the defence from medical experts including a neuroradiologist and paediatric neurosurgeon.
It was likely to be three or four months before their reports were available.
Savou has elected a judge-alone trial, which is expected to take up to two weeks. The court will need to find a special time allocation for it.
Savou was further remanded on bail to appear again at another call-over on February 3, for the court to monitor progress of the experts’ reports and to firm up a trial date.
