Rowing Club members to the rescue after man falls in river
Three members of Gisborne Rowing Club have been praised for their actions yesterday morning in keeping a man afloat after he fell into the Turanganui River.
The heavily built man went into the river off the former Wattie's wharf on Reads Quay at around 9.25am.
The tide was high at the time.
“Three young men from the rowing club, on the river training, saw the 29-year-old fall into the water and went to his aid,” an emergency services spokesman said.
“They used rescue tubes they carry in their craft to help support the man in the water until the emergency services arrived.”
Firefighters used a basket stretcher and ropes to lift the man out of the water.
He was transported to Gisborne Hospital's emergency department for treatment, then admitted to hospital.
He was this morning described as being in a stable condition.
“It was not clear what caused the man to fall into the river. He remained semi-conscious throughout.
“The three rowers did a great job supporting him until we got there.”
