Strong wind fans burnoff
A BURNOFF of greenwaste on a farm property in Lake Road at Patutahi spread into a large area of gorse and blackberry late yesterday afternoon, fanned by the strong winds.
Fire and Emergency NZ sent appliances from the city, Patutahi, and Rural Fire to the scene at around 5pm.
“The fire crews stood by and assessed the situation and it was decided to hand it over to the landowners, who used heavy machinery on site to put a fire break around it,” a rural fire spokesman said.
“A digger was used to work over the area of burning hillside vegetation and the fire was left to burn out overnight.”
Rural Fire maintained a watch on the fire until around 9pm last night.
“The fire site was monitored again this morning by Rural Fire and the landowners,” he said. The fire did not threaten any property.
“Even though we are still in an open fire season, people need to be aware of the wind conditions when lighting fires in the open.”
