On roads for right reasons
POLICE stopped more than 1400 vehicles at the State Highway 35 Covid-19 checkpoint and nearly 130 at the East Cape checkpoint on the opening day of Alert Level 3 in the region.
The figures for Wednesday, September 1, illustrate the flow of traffic on the Coast highway.
“Three people from out of the district were stopped at Wharekahika/Hicks Bay, and they were all there for bona fide reasons,” area police commander Inspector Sam Aberahama said.
“There were three people stopped at Okitu from outside Tairawhiti as well, again all for bona fide reasons.
“The checkpoint staff have been encountering lots of essential workers and whanau moving about in the district for the right reasons.”
Police deployed road spikes on Wednesday to stop a man in a vehicle who was wanted on a warrant to arrest.
“The spikes were used in the Tamarau area and the man was arrested,” Insp Aberahama said.
