Checkpoints ‘rolling along well’

The police fixed checkpoints at two locations in the region continue and so does the good behaviour from people moving about in the district.

Fixed checkpoints are operating day and night on State Highway 35 at Okitu at Wainui and the top of East Cape, along with mobile checkpoints covering SH2 south and the road to Lake Waikaremoana.

“The checkpoints are rolling along well and we remain pleased with what we're encountering,” area police commander Inspector Sam Aberahama said.

“It is quite noticeable that the shift to Alert Level 3 has generated more traffic on the roads, and we're seeing that at the checkpoints.

“Our staff have been stopping plenty of vehicles, talking to the drivers, and we continue to be happy with the situation. People coming into the district from outside continue to be coming here for the right reasons.”

Insp Aberahama said police had yet to catch up with a man who abused and threatened staff at the Mobile Portside service station on Tuesday.

It happened when service station staff pointed out he had to wear a mask to enter the premises.

“He continues to evade us but we will find him.”
