Teen girl dies after bicycle accident
The 14-year-old girl involved in an accident on Thursday while riding a bike has died.
Willow Stone passed away in Gisborne Hospital at around 3pm yesterday afternoon, said Detective Sergeant Eric Hunter.
Police have extended their sympathies to Willow’s family at this sad time.
Willow rode her bicycle out of a driveway near the Winifred Street corner at the northern end of Lysnar Street at around 10.30am on Thursday when the accident, involving a van, happened.
She suffered a severe head injury which was not survivable.
Nearby residents carried out CPR on Willow until emergency services arrived.
The paramedic on board the Trust Tairawhiti Rescue Helicopter, the first emergency service to arrive, stabilised Willow at the roadside and she was taken to Gisborne Hospital in a St John ambulance.
Det Sgt Eric Hunter said in terms of their ongoing inquiry into the tragedy they had completed their scene inquiries and had interviewed witnesses.
“We still have to carry out an inspection of the van involved, and the bicycle.
“The driver of the van is shocked and upset about what happened,” Det Sgt Hunter said.
“He is also being supported by Victim Support, who continue to support Willow’s family.”
