Community forum no-show prompts reminder

Wairoa residents are encouraged to present at the Wairoa District Council's forum meetings, after this month's gathering was cancelled due to lack of interest.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little said the forums were designed to enable members of the public to bring matters to the attention of the local authority and elected members, and were an integral part of the council's engagement.

“The council has just come off the back of eight months intensive community consultation as part of the rates review and Long-Term Plan. I'm figuring people probably need to catch their breath, but I also don't want to lose momentum,” he said.

“Council forums are held every six weeks and we genuinely want to hear what people have to say. We want to continue to engage and listen to our community and encourage people to share their thoughts at the public forums.”

An assessment is made a week before the date of forum as to whether the meeting will proceed. This is based on whether members of the public have requested to speak at the forum.

The July forum was cancelled as there were no requests to present from members of the public.

Elected members still meet and will workshop topics but Mr Little said it was a shame to miss an opportunity to hear from members of the public.

The next scheduled council forum is Tuesday, August 24, with people encouraged to register their interest in making a presentation as early as possible.
