Bomb disposal team in action Saturday
A huge explosion heard across parts of Gisborne on Saturday was a controlled detonation, the New Zealand Defence Force has confirmed.
“A member of the public reported a quantity of agricultural explosive that required destruction to NZ Police in the Gisborne region,” an NZDF spokesman said.
“New Zealand Police requested assistance from the NZDF bomb disposal team and the explosive was subsequently destroyed by detonation.
“A disposal task also occurred in the Matawai area on July 8 after a quantity of explosives in degraded condition were reported in that location.
“Tasks of this nature are conducted infrequently in the Gisborne region and are conducted as they are reported. No other tasks are planned.”
Saturday's explosion was heard as far away as Wainui while a Matawai resident told The Herald she felt a “huge bang and massive shock right through our house. I've never felt anything like it before.”
