Dive squad finish their search at Tolaga Bay
The larger scale search for missing Tolaga Bay woman Jamie Kaiwai ended late yesterday afternoon without any sign of her and, apart from daily shoreline sweeps by police, it has now been suspended.
The 27-year-old woman was last seen walking on the beach near the wharf on the night of Friday, October 11.
“The police national dive squad completed their sonar search around the Tolaga Bay wharf yesterday, and the team returned to Wellington this morning,” said search co-ordinator Sergeant Greg Lexmond.
“Unfortunately we have found no sign of Jamie and we are all very disappointed not to have been able to do so.
“The chances of finding her now are very remote — that is if she in fact ever entered the water, which we have assumed all along.”
Search and rescue volunteers, police, other members of the public and family members have been involved in an extensive land and sea search of the area since her vehicle was found at the wharf carpark on Sunday, October 13.
“We had hoped to have been able to bring closure for her family by finding her, but sadly we have not been able to do so,” Sergeant Lexmond said.
“Our thoughts go out to her family at this tragic time.”
Daily shoreline searches by local police will continue for some time yet.
