Re: Penguin safety fears, January 8 story.

It’s so sad to see kororā nesting and moulting in between those concrete blocks because their nesting ground was destroyed when the port built the seawall. Those concrete blocks need to be removed and replaced with a rock wall that provide a habitat for kororā.

Professor John Cockrem, internationally acclaimed penguin expert, made six recommendations in his report dated December 8, 2021 to the port. Why hasn’t the port engaged him to write the Penguin Management Plan? He is the penguin expert. Kororā population and survival rates are under threat in New Zealand due to human activity, dogs and introduced pests.
