A final meal of own words

1 min read

A sad day for Tairāwhiti to see The Gisborne Herald finally succumb to the pressures of the modern world.

A massive thanks to the Muir family for a great little newspaper, once perfect in every way, but now a shadow of its former self.

Because of Gisborne’s unique position in the world, the first city to see the light, we once got tomorrow’s news today. Now we are lucky to get last week’s news tomorrow.

A physical newspaper is much kinder to the eyes than the internet; used to make a great wrapper for the Catholic staple, Friday night fish and chips; made a great fire starter; and could be used as a weed mat.

But move with the times we must and who would ever want to see a return to the outhouse, with squares of newspaper instead of a loo roll.

I guess it is back to the crystal ball, the dreams and the tea leaves to get an accurate picture of what is happening in the world, now that it is getting harder to determine which is fake news.

As my Granny used to say, Bible in one hand, Sheba’s Dream book in the other, “Believe nothing that you hear and only half what you see.”

Thanks again Mr Muir. This will be the last time I get to compost the newspaper and finally eat my own words.
