Near-record prices for sheep at Matawhero

A total of 573 sheep sold yesterday at the Matawhero saleyards, the first sale in two weeks.

Much of the offering consisted of small lots of prime sheep.

There were also three pens of ewes with lambs at foot and these sold well.

All sheep sold at near-record prices, including one extremely heavy ewe from Komanawa P/S, which fetched $290.

Hinenui Genetics Ltd received the best price of $272 in the prime lamb section for a pen of five ram lambs.

The few store lambs offered sold from $151 down to $50.

Mangapoi Station Ltd sold 93 good, healthy, mixed-age store ewes for $155.

The best price for ewes with lambs at foot went to MD and CA Utting for six ewes and 10 lambs. They made $121, all counted.

The ewes were five years old, with a one-year mouth, and the lambs were estimated to be 4-6 weeks old.

With good grass growth at present, the demand for store sheep should increase during the coming weeks.
