VIC cows dominate fair

THERE were 1300 cattle sold at Tuesday's Matawhero cattle fair, which was dominated by vetted in-calf Angus mixed-aged cows and rising three-year heifers.

Prices for these rose by 50-75 cents/kg compared with the previous fair, no doubt aided by the presentation of well-bred capital stock by two vendors.

All of these in-calf cattle have been sold to farmers throughout the North Island.

The best price of $1500 for R3-year heifers went to Grant and Sue Crawshaw at Nuhaka for a pen of 15 vetted in-calf, weighing a heavy 535kg.

MJ and JM Charteris at Waerenga-o-Kuri received $1420 for capital stock, VIC, mixed-aged cows. These 95 cows weighed from 605kg down to 525kg.

LMJ P/S at Ruatoria also sold capital stock, VIC cows, their best price being $1370 for a pen of 86, weighing 510kg.

Prices per kg: MA cows, VIC: $2.70 - $1.51; R3-yr heifers, VIC: $2.84 - $1.85; R2-yr heifers: $2.38 - $2.05; R1-yr heifers: $2.01 - $1.74; R3-yr steers: $2.68 - $2.40; R2-yr steers: $2.72 - $2.16; R2-yr bulls: $2.27.
