When jazz meets classical

The Gisborne Orchestra is joining forces with John Mackill's Jazz Collective to bring a new kind of concert to Holy Trinity church hall this Sunday.

The collaborative programme features jazz and classical numbers and the premiere of a playful waltz by Mackill.

The group, conducted by Richard Flyger, are combining their talents to perform Mozart to a Mexican dance.

Mackill has arranged Crystal Silence, Prenatal Waltz, Stardust and Palhaco.

The orchestra is a mix of old and new players playing stringed and wind instruments who meet regularly on Mondays and welcome new players who want to dip their toes.

The programme will open with the Jazz Collective playing pieces by Oliver Nelson and John Mackill.

Following a short break, the orchestra will play a selection of short pieces featuring, among others, The Beatles, Corelli, Mozart, and Schumann.

The two groups will then combine to play Moreno, Chick Corea, Egberto Gismonti, Hoagy Carmichael, and John Mackill.

Light refreshments will be available beforehand.

The concert kicks off at Holy Trinity church hall on Sunday, 2.30pm. Tickets at the door, $15 entry, $10 for students and seniors.
