Teen critical after being knocked off bicycle
The accident happened near the Winifred Street corner at the northern end of Lysnar Street at around 10.30am.
Nearby residents cared for the injured girl until further help arrived in the form of the Trust Tairawhiti rescue helicopter, which was the first emergency service to arrive.
"The residents carried out CPR on the injured girl, and basically kept her alive until we got there," said the chopper's intensive paramedic Lachlan Clark.
"They did an awesome job caring for the girl. I believe they were registered nurses.
"We landed the helicopter as close as we could to the accident scene and I stabilised the girl," he said.
"She had suffered a head injury."
When police arrived they cordoned off Lysnar Street between Williamson Street and Winifred Street while the teenager was treated on the roadside.
St John ambulance arrived at the scene and the injured girl was driven to Gisborne Hospital in status one (critical) condition.
Police immediately began a serious crash inquiry.
