Voice of Mangatu iwi
Monday, October 01, 2012
Re: New east coast oil/gas study, Sept 29 story.
I do hope Mr Heatley and others will invite the Hapu/Iwi Environmental Consultancy Group, as they are the voice that represents the Iwi o Nga Ariki Kaiputahi at Mangatu.
As far as I’m aware, this is the only iwi in the Tairawhiti district that has an Iwi Management Plan — mandated by the iwi and handed over to the council to give regard to whenever matters concerning the environment come up that may directly or indirectly affect their whenua/rohe and its people.
Furthermore, this is the only iwi that has made a public declaration through public notice in The Gisborne Herald, 1st September, 2012, that they oppose all oil and gas exploratory practices, including hydraulic fracturing, in their rohe. Isn’t this clear enough!?
It would be good for Mr Heatley to “personally” meet with this group who take environmental and cultural matters very seriously indeed.
