Impatience
Re: Cyclist ‘a total plonker’, August 16 letter:

I am a biker and find it very hard to approach intersections because of the impatient drivers in Gisborne. The other day I was coming to a stop at one when a car zoomed past because the driver didn’t want to be behind me.

We cyclists have equal rights. It’s frustrating because we are constantly getting the blame for being too slow.

I do agree with the lights though, and high visibility jackets.

Lights and Hi Vis jackets . . . it seems some Gisborne drivers just view these as targets, making it easier to hit you!
I was nearly knocked off a bike on two occasions in one week recently - lights did not help.
8th August, Childers and Customhouse round-a-bout, 1400 lumin headlight on, a car pulls out from Childers Rd . . . driver's comment is that she did not see me.
The following Saturday, SH2 between Manutuke and Waipaoa, the driver of a nice ute sporting a corporate logo leans on the horn, swerves to the left and clips us with a wing mirror . . . I am sure we were holding up this driver - on a straight clear piece of road!

Do you agree with a bid to pull bridge jumpers away from unsafe road bridges in the city by building “bombing platforms” for youngsters in safe places along the Turanganui River?
