Challenge: Drive Coast road
Re: Chance to fix crossing, August 1 letter.

You are correct in thinking that the rail crossings need addressing but this is the least of our worries — they consist of just a metre or two of rough roads in this district.

I offer a challenge to ratepayers, councillors and all licensed drivers . . . the challenge is to drive up the East Coast to Hicks Bay.

It is an education: one lane sections, uneven surfaces, dropouts, dangerous bridge approaches, and temporary signs that have been in place for years.

Before you blame the state of the roads on trucks, industry comes from forestry and farming and they are the largest contributers of road user charges — and the most affected by the poor condition of this highway that supports the district.

Pity also the Coast residents.

Remember, here in Gisborne we advertise this region as a tourist destination — and the council spends ratepayers’ money promoting this: cycle lanes, pristine coastlines, etc.

It’s a pity that once on our roads, many will never return or recommend this district to anyone.
