Seeking help not weak — it’s a sign of strength

Opinion Piece
Letter

When I stopped being the Gisborne Coroner in 2008, I hoped that the suicide rate here would decrease. Unfortunately that is not so. I agree with the Chief Coroner that the reasons people take their own life are varied. Every one is a tragedy.

I applaud the work of the groups in Gisborne who work to address the problem of suicide, particularly of young males. Any person who feels depressed or suicidal should seek help from someone they know or from the groups in the community.

It is not weak to seek help. I see it as a sign of strength.
