Plenty to look forward to in ‘real’ Gisborne summer

Opinion Piece

Now for the real summer.

There is nothing like some genuine hot weather to get into the summer mood and two days with the temperature in the 30s sets the scene perfectly.

The chaos and turmoil of the main holiday season are now behind us and we can look forward to what are traditionally the best two months of the year.

January is on average the warmest month of the year in Gisborne. The record temperature for the month, 36.6 Celsius (just under 100 deg Fahrenheit), was set in 2011. You can expect an average of nine hours of sunshine a day in January while February is usually one of the most settled months of the year. By contrast, December can often be wet and overcast and water temperatures are still below their annual peak.

It was no surprise to read this week that Gisborne was the warmest part of the country in 2016 with an average mean maximum temperature of 21.1. While we are not sure exactly what an average mean maximum is, we are happy to accept the welcome accolade.

There are lots of good things to look forward to in the coming two months, including the extremely popular East Coast Vibes on January 28 and a race meeting at Makaraka on February 19. That is on top of the simple pleasures of swimming, fishing, camping or just enjoying the great outdoors whatever way you prefer.

The calendar has been kind too, with successive long weekends coming at the end of January and in the first week of February through the Auckland Anniversary and then Waitangi Day both falling on Mondays.

Unfortunately there is a downside to this warm weather, with monitoring by various agencies indicating the region is on the edge of drought conditions, soil moisture having fallen below the 145mm mark. Water restrictions have been introduced, and some rain would be more than welcome.

But in the meantime it is the time of the year that barbecues come into their own and sunscreen is a necessity. It’s a Gisborne — and East Coast — summer. Just lie back and enjoy it.
