Beautiful art on display
I took four art-crazy friends from out of town to Toihoukura on Saturday morning. Luckily for us Michelle Kerr, a talented local artist, was there and kindly shared with us her thinking and some of the processes she used in relation to her own beautiful works, which included both mixed media and weaving.
We were all blown away with the high quality of all the art on display. There were stories to be told through every unique creation.
I invite you, if you haven’t been there lately, to visit and be impressed by the sheer talent of the students. They must have fantastic kaiako!
Hearing that two New Zealand art schools which have provided Maori and Pacifika artists with a place to explore their particular cultural perspectives are likely to be closed or have their funding reduced, it is great to know Tairawhiti, once again, is providing such a wonderful kura. I am saving up my putea to buy one of those magnificent pieces for my loved one for Christmas now.
