Long live the ginkgo tree
Some of us take time to admire the beautiful (female) ginkgo tree in the council grounds, that has the most beautiful autumn leaves and offers shade in the summer.
The ginkgo tree is one of the oldest species of trees in the world, a tree that Confucius is said to have sat under while teaching, and it has many health properties.
Yes, the fruit of the female tree smell for about a month but has Margaret Thorpe seen the Chinese in our community collecting the fruit for the nut inside which, when dried and roasted, tastes similar to pine nuts or sweet chestnuts?
There are worse smells around our city than the old ginkgo tree, so I say spare it for its beauty. Park somewhere else if you must and don’t sweat the small stuff.
Too many trees disappear around town for no apparent cause.
