Gisborne’s McDonald blows away Aorangi No.1

Gisborne's Tessa McDonald added another No.1 scalp to her list at the national women’s national interprovincial in Christchurch yesterday.

McDonald, playing at the top of the order for Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay, blew away Aorangi counterpart and former tour professional Catherine Knight on a dry and windy day on the Waitikiri course.

HBPB drew 2½-all with their South Island opposition to remain fifth in their section, with one round-robin clash to play.

McDonald took her record to three wins and two losses – an excellent showing and yet again the anchor for the HBPB side.

Her losses have been to Auckland and North Harbour, who, with one section clash to go today, have already booked their places in the semifinals.

McDonald has been guilty of slow starts in most of her matches. Yesterday, she got her nose in front to be 2-up at the turn and never looked back as she completed a 5 and 4 victory.

HBPB veteran Janie Field, at No.2, had a half and No.3 Haena Seol won 3 and 2.

No.4 Samantha Carroll and No.5 Fiona Ellis both lost on the 18th.

HBPB face Otago tomorrow. A team win would lift them to fourth in their section and into a playoff for seventh and eighth overall.
