Fire destroys farm building
A FARM building on a property at Rere was destroyed by fire mid-afternoon yesterday, with the blaze sparked by a fault with a quad bike parked near the buiilding.
Fire and Emergency NZ sent crews from Gisborne and Te Karaka to the incident at around 3.30pm.
The building, believed to be a shearers quarters, was on the ground, almost completely destroyed, by the time the fire crews arrived.
It took the crews 45 minutes to drive there.
An appliance and a tanker were sent from Gisborne, the same from the Te Karaka volunteer brigade, and rural fire units also attended.
“We were there for about two and half hours,” a senior firefighter said.
“As well as levelling the building, the fire spread to vegetation around it, and about 200 square metres of grass was burned.”
What caused the quad bike to catch fire has not yet been established.
