Investigation continues into fatal Coast crash
POLICE have completed their scene examination alongside State Highway 35 north of Te Araroa where a local man was killed in a crash yesterday morning.
The man, from Te Araroa and aged in his early 50s, died when the people mover-type vehicle he was driving left the road near the Karakatuwhero Bridge and struck a tree.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“His vehicle suffered extensive damage to the frontal area due to the heavy impact,” police said.
The man had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters.
“The damaged vehicle has been brought to Gisborne for examination.”
The man's name has not yet been released by police.
“We are still in the process of advising all next-of-kin.
“Our inquiry into the circumstances of the crash continues.
“The weather conditions at the time were atrocious, with heavy rain and wind.”
Police have extended their condolences to the man's family.
