Coast man killed in Highway 35 crash
A MAN from the Te Araroa area died in a vehicle crash on State Highway 35 at the top of East Cape this morning.
The SUV-type vehicle he was driving left the highway and struck a tree near Karakatuwhero Bridge north of the township.
Police, Fire and Emergency NZ crews from Te Araroa and Tikitiki and St John Ambulance were called to the crash at around 7.30am.
Firefighters had to cut the man from the wreckage of the vehicle.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have started a Serious Crash Inquiry into the tragedy.
■ PEOPLE in two cars that collided on De Lautour Road last night were checked over by St John Ambulance officers at the scene.
Emergency services were called to the crash near the Martin Road corner at around 8.50pm.
“There were some minor injuries and the injured were checked out by St John officers,” an emergency services spokesman said.
“There was some coolant spilled from the vehicles on to the roadway which was dealt with by firefighters.”
