Truck crash on SH35, driver OK

The driver of a scrap metal truck escaped injury this morning when his rig went into a drain on Panikau Hill at Whangara on SH35

The highway was blocked for some time.

The crash happened at around 6.45am, causing a considerable build-up of traffic on both sides of the incident.

“The truck and trailer unit was empty and was heading up the coast when the accident happened,” an emergency services spokesman said.

“The truck was in the drain and the trailer completely blocked the road.”

Fortunately the vehicle stayed on its wheels.

Gisborne Hiabs was called in to remove the damaged unit and it was brought down to Gisborne.

Police said the highway was closed at the crash scene for about 45 minutes, then it was reopened to one lane.

It was fully reopened at around 9.30am.

Police have an inquiry under way into the cause of the crash.
