Minor injuries after vehicle leaves SH35 near Kaiaua turn-off
A man was taken to Gisborne Hospital yesterday afternoon after the 4x4 ute he was driving left State Highway 35 north of Tolaga Bay and crashed.
Emergency services responded at around 2.30pm to a spot about 2km past the Kaiaua turnoff.
“The 70-year-old's vehicle went into a drain, through a fence, then part of a maize paddock, before veering back into the roadside drain,” a Tolaga Bay senior firefighter said.
“It appears he may have had some sort of medical event prior to the crash.
“Fortunately he suffered only minor injuries. He was very lucky.”
The Tolaga Bay first responders transported the man to Tolaga Bay, where he was transferred to a St John ambulance from Gisborne and taken to hospital.
The firefighters were able to recover the man's vehicle and were surprised to find it was still driveable.
The man was heading up the East Coast when the crash happened.
No update on the man's condition was available when the Herald went to print today.
