Gang prospect in custody after police pursuit
A gang prospect from Frasertown near Wairoa was arrested on Friday night following a fleeing driver incident and foot chase by Wairoa police.
He was remanded in custody after an initial court appearance in Gisborne.
The 29-year-old man had been sought by police after he failed to appear in Gisborne District Court last month.
“It is alleged the man was involved in several recent gang-related incidents in Wairoa, including a vehicle ramming and gang-related confrontations at addresses in Frasertown and Wairoa,” said Detective Sergeant Brent Griffiths of Wairoa CIB.
The man was remanded in custody to appear again in court in March.
“The safety of the Wairoa community remains our top priority,” said Det Sgt Griffiths. “Violent activity will not be tolerated and those responsible will be held to account.”
Det Sgt Griffiths said the public could expect to see an increased police presence and visibility over the next few weeks in Wairoa.
“I would encourage the community to report any concerns to police immediately.
“I would also encourage anyone who has information in relation to the recent gang-related events to contact the Wairoa police directly on (06) 838 0700 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
