Hammer used in attack
A Wairoa man has admitted injuring a woman by stomping on her head and hitting her about the head and body with a hammer.
Richard Charles Smith, 54, forest worker, pleaded guilty on arraignment to an amended charge of injuring with reckless disregard just ahead of a jury trial previously scheduled for this week in Gisborne District Court.
The charge — a representative one — does not qualify for a Three Strikes warning.
Judge Warren Cathcart further remanded Smith in custody for sentence on March 12.
A pre-sentence report traversing electronically-monitored sentence options was ordered.
Smith has been in custody since the incident, on January 30 of last year.
