Violent squall cuts power to all Wairoa
The lights went out in the whole of Wairoa yesterday, after a burst of wild weather caused significant damage to power lines.
At 7.30pm lines company Eastland Network turned the power off to the Wairoa township so they could carry out urgent repairs. More than 1200 people were affected.
As planned, the power was restored to most people just before 9.30pm.
“Unfortunately, around 240 customers remained without power overnight,” Eastland Network acting general manager Jarred Moroney said.
“They live in places where the wind damage was particularly severe. It couldn't be repaired quickly, easily or safely last night.
“Our faults crews headed out again at first light, along with three tree crews. The most challenging areas are Morere, Marumaru and Titirangi. At Marumaru, for example, we need to helicopter in a power pole. There are also a number of faults in other areas including Tukemokihi, Hereheretau, Iwitea, Mangaone and the back of Frasertown.
“We'd like to thank everyone in the Wairoa area for their patience as we continue with repairs today.”
Regular updates will be posted on the Eastland Network Facebook page. People are asked to treat all lines as live at all times. To report a fault, call the Network's 24 hour faults line on 0800 206 207.
