Extra cruise ship visits to Gisborne
Some cruise ship companies have reworked their schedules around New Zealand in the wake of the Whakaari/White Island tragedy and it means an additional eight visits for Tairawhiti this season.
The first of those extra visits happens tomorrow on what has become a double cruise ship day.
One of the biggest cruise ships to visit here, the 75,000-tonne Leo class Explorer Dream, will be joined by the much smaller Caledonia Sky that docked here earlier this week.
'The eight additional cruise visits now scheduled for Gisborne takes the number of visits here for the season to 24 in total through to early March,' said Trust Tairawhiti tourism general manager Adam Hughes.
'The Whakaari/White Island tragedy has led to a reshuffling by the cruise lines.
'I would expect our cruise organisation and community in Gisborne will rise to the occasion, and warmly welcome these new vessels and their passengers and crew,' Mr Hughes said.
Tomorrow's visit by the Explorer Dream will be the first of four visits she will make this season, bringing around 2800 passengers and 1300 crew each time.
The Caledonia Sky, with 114 passengers, will call here on two further occasions after tomorrow, including New Year's Day.
The luxury cruise ship Le Laperouse, operated by the Ponant Company, is the other additional cruise liner to come here this season.
'She will make her maiden visit here on January 22, the first of five visits.'
Le Laperouse, named after a famous French explorer, was built in 2018 and carries 184 passengers and 110 crew.
'The additional visits will bring extra economic opportunity to our region, and again give us the opportunity to showcase ourselves to the passengers and crew on board the ships,' Mr Hughes said.
'We're ready and we're excited about the Explorer Dream's visit tomorrow and to have the Caledonia Sky back again.'
The Explorer Dream will go to anchor in Turanganui-a-Kiwa/Poverty Bay at about 7.30am tomorrow, and will sail again at about 7pm.
The Caledonia Sky will dock again at Eastland Port for the day.
'The markets are being readied in Treble Court, our volunteers have all been briefed and equipped, and the tour operators are looking forward to their first big cruise day of the season.'
'Steam train Wa165 is likewise being prepared for the day, with two trips to Muriwai and back, and with kapa haka performances at Muriwai by the local school children.'
Weather conditions tomorrow look perfect. A fine day is forecast with a top temperature of 27 degrees, and north-westerly winds.
Sea conditions look promising, too, with no swell of note expected in the bay tomorrow.
