Carloads sets up ‘win-win’ hort business

A start-up company which connects growers with pre-screened workers on demand by making it easier for workers (kaimahi) to get to the job is holding a registration day tomorrow.

Carloads is calling for seasonal orchard workers to visit them at Kaiti Mall tomorrow, from 11am, to register and find out more about the company.

The Gisborne labour supply company, created by persimmon orchardist Candice Pardy, was the winning business idea at the Tairawhiti Start-up Weekend earlier this year.

Ms Pardy came up with Carloads after facing challenges finding reliable labour and realised that transport to and from the job was a major issue for many workers.

Carloads solves the problem by giving fuel vouchers to people with cars, she said.

They in turn give their workmates a free ride to the job.

'There are no hidden costs, and we promise fair pay and fair work conditions.

'The registration day will be a relaxed way to meet over a sausage sizzle and find out more about the orchard job opportunities on offer.

'I set up Carloads to create a win-win situation for workers and growers alike.

'The Tairawhiti region is thriving, but all too often growers struggle to find enough workers for seasonal jobs on their orchards,' she says.

'Meanwhile workers can find it hard to get to work if they don't own a car.

'I set up Carloads to make it easier for kaimahi to work, and to help the region's growers by giving them reliable access to pre-screened workers on demand.

The system works by letting registered drivers and workers know where the pick-up points are and then matching them up. For example, a driver taking a car-load of four people to an orchard every day for a week would be given $100 worth of vouchers.

Carloads is looking for as many local people as possible, including beneficiaries, students and backpackers.

This season it will focus on seasonal orchard work in the Tairawhiti region but plans to expand further afield.

'Carloads is all about being fair and workable for all. I believe it has the potential to transform the horticulture labour industry and transform workers' lives.'
