Diversity the dinner talk over a curry tomorrow

A dinner to celebrate diversity in the Tairawhiti community will be held tomorrow night at Bollywood.

Tairawhiti Multicultural Council (TMC), with support from the Office of Ethnic Communities, will host the dinner.

All proceeds were go to youth development projects in the district.

TMC president Arish Naresh said the dinner event was an opportunity to bring people together to discuss the importance of diversity, inclusion and belonging.

“Our region is growing more diverse every day and it is important to have these conversations and tackle the polite racism that exists in our communities.

“We must tackle Islamophobia and any other racial phobias that people have through constructive dialogue and continuous education.

“Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon is our guest speaker on the night.”

Mr Naresh said TMC’s mission was to promote the beauty of diversity in the region so that events such as the Christchurch attacks six months ago did not take place again in our country.

TMC vice-president Tony Robinson said no child was born knowing how to hate, or judge others by their age, colour, sexual preference, abilities, means, cultural and religious practices.

“It is us who teach our children to despise, to envy, to judge, to hate.

“We cloak our children in shrouds of prejudice, some subtly gossamer thin, some blatantly thick and coarse”.

Tickets are $25 and can be bought by contacting Arish Naresh on 022 624 8145 or acnaresh@hotmail.com
