Tiny house goes in a seller’s market

Possibly Gisborne’s most affordable home has sold under the hammer — for just $38,000.

Perched on a 3.5 tonne galvanised trailer the tiny home — covering just 22 sq m of floor space — created by a Gisborne builder, was auctioned at Bronwyn Kay Real Estate yesterday.

Fully self-contained with separate kitchen and bathroom, insulated walls and ceiling and a loft “bedroom”, the home had generated phenomenal interest said auctioneer Jake Stevens.

“We had quite a good turn out for the auction. It didn’t sell for a huge price but the owner was happy to let it go.

“The interest on it, from the very day we moved it to the car park out the front of the business was just phenomenal.

“We were dealing with anything up to 20-odd groups a day. It was just quite apparent, with the current shortage of homes and rentals in Gisborne, there’s certainly a demand for alternative accommodation.”

The winning bid, more than $350,000 under the district’s median house price (of $390,000), was made by a Gisborne woman.
