Boat parking solution for port proves elusive
WHEN Gisborne District Council gets together for the first time on Thursday councillors will consider the failure of a proposed interim solution for the problems of boat parking in the inner harbour.
A report before the Future Tairawhiti Committee (the full council) says that the proposed interim solution presented to the council in December is generally unsupported and staff are recommending that the interim parking options do not proceed.
The committee will be asked to agree to further work being carried out with the relevant stakeholders on a permanent solution that would come back to the council as part of the wider inner harbour redevelopment concept.
The issue of boat trailer parking capacity, traffic congestion and safety concerns in and around Shed Three has been a thorny one for the council for some time.
An interim solution presented to a meeting of stakeholders in November was not fully supported, the committee will be told. Staff have been working with boat owners to refine the proposal but have been unable to find a solution that can be agreed upon by the boat owners and that would also be supported by the three businesses in the area and cruise ship organisers.
The interim solution would have included the removal of five pohutukawa trees and two garden beds to improve parking capacity and turning space for boats and trailers, and the conversion of parks outside Bronwen Kay Real Estate into a boat ramp loading zone.
The committee will be given an update on the Taruheru cycle and walkway where Mayor Meng Foon asked the council to consider an alternative route along the Taruheru River.
A feasibility study is being carried out by consultants for a fee of $70,330. The final report is due back in March and the findings are expected to be presented to the council in April.
The committee will also be given an update on the Cycleways programme for which $12 million has been allocated over the 2015-25 Long Term Plan period.
Also on the agenda is an update on discussions with local iwi on the formation of a Local Leadership Board as part of the Treaty settlements with Turanga iwi.
Following the committee meeting there will be a workshop on the Waikanae to Waipaoa Land Use study Stage One focusing on the several high value coastal areas within a few minutes of the city centre.
