Carol your way to Christmas at three singalongs
Gisborne will sing its way to Christmas at three Christmas carol celebrations.
Ballance Street Village, Kelvin Park and Bushmere Estate will all host festive family events over the next week.
Carols by Candlelight will be held in the Ballance Street Village on Friday and the village will be in the Christmas spirit throughout the day.
Businesses will bring out market stalls and dress to spread the Christmas cheer, while buskers play from late afternoon.
Family activities will begin at 6pm with a fancy dress competition for children. There will also be a merry-go-round, bouncy castle, visit from Santa and performances from entertainers. Carols will begin at dusk at 8.30pm.
Ballance Street will be closed from Ormond Rd to Stout Street to create a village square from 5pm until 9pm, and people can set up their chairs and picnics along the street and footpaths.
Pharmacy 53 owner, and chairman of the Village People Group Nigel Campbell says he hopes for a large turnout.
“Bring a candle, a seat and a picnic, and join in the entertainment,” he says.
On Sunday, Smith City Christmas in the Park will be held at Kelvin Park behind the ?C Company House.
Beginning at 5.30pm, the celebrations will feature Gisborne musicians playing popular Christmas tunes, and a visit from Santa.
Entry is free, and organisers encourage people to bring along a picnic and join the Christmas cheer.
Carols in the Vines will return to Bushmere Estate next Wednesday.
The community Christmas carol singalong will be led by St Andrew’s Choir, accompanied by the Gisborne Civic Orchestra.
There will be performances by musicians and vocalists.
Gates will open at 5.30pm. Entry is $5 for adults and free for children, with proceeds going towards Family Works.
There will be food and drinks for sale, or people can bring along a picnic. Any alcoholic beverages must be bought on site.
