Add more cycle/walkways

Letter

I share Bob Hughes' concern for cyclists, re his letter 'It's about sharing the road'.

I also have cycled for many years in Gisborne and have been knocked off twice — once on a roundabout. I was on the roundabout when a vehicle passed me and then cut me off. Fortunately I was not injured but clearly the driver did not know that you do not pass anyone on a roundabout, even a cyclist.

We need more cycle/walkways in Gisborne, including one along the banks of the Taruheru that connects to the schools, to encourage cycling to school but also for adults and children going to shops, dentists, doctors etc.

I am sure that if the council puts in the infrastructure, it will be used. One only needs to see the use made of the walkway between Waikanae and Midway.

As a community, we need to encourage walking and cycling. That's consistent with the council resolution recognising its leadership role with regard to climate change.

  1. Safety first I say says:

I would have thought Gisborne city has more than enough cycle/walkways.
No doubt the council will probably take heed of people’s calls for this to happen in Gisborne.
However, I and many others in Tolaga have been calling for the council to finish the walkway along Hauiti to the wharf corner, where they left off 15+ years ago. Every time this issue arises at their meetings in Tolaga it is put in the next 10-year plan. So sad that nothing has been done all these years.
