Gathering to discuss the drought

A meeting is planned to discuss the impact of the drought that affected parts of the district over summer and autumn, facilitated by Agriculture Recovery Facilitator David Scott.

“The effects of the drought in our region were sporadic, with some districts suffering more than others,” he said.

“The physical geography along with the constant ‘rain shadow' often was the difference between some rain and no rain.”

Two of the more severely affected districts, Ngatapa and Rere, requested Rural Support to organise a community gathering that included other affected rural districts.

“An event has been planned for the rural districts of Waingake, Muriwai, Waerenga-o-Kuri, Tahunga, Pehiri, Wharekopae, Rere and Ngatapa,” Mr Scott said.

“Families from those districts are invited to the Ngatapa Rugby Clubrooms on Friday July 3, commencing 3.30pm.

The gathering has been sponsored by Rural Support Trust, MPI and Tom Lane Property Brokers Real Estate.

“There will be a guest speaker, Gerard Vaughan from Farmstrong.”

Those who wish to attend have been asked to phone 06 869 0870 or 027 211 9941 to register their interest, which will assist with catering numbers.

“It is important to note that the objective for the gathering is the opportunity for our rural families to reconnect, get together, exchange drought plus Covid-19 lockdown stories and have a laugh.”
