Mixed prices at small sale
JUST 515 sheep were sent for sale at yesterday's weekly Matawhero sale and the outstanding feature were the 365 Wiltshire ewe lambs from Arakihi Station at Tolaga Bay.
These were keenly sought after for breeding purposes, due to their ability to shed their fleece. The first pen of 72 sold for $185.
The total consignment averaged $142-50, well above current store market prices.
The successful sale of these lambs is in sharp contrast to the current gloom created by the dry summer and uncertainty over Chinese markets.
The 22 prime ewes offered took a big drop in price compared with 2 months ago, selling from $130 down to $81.
